ANTONYEL PACHECO E A BANDA DO PROFESSOR: QUANDO A MÚSICA TRANSFORMA VIDAS E CONQUISTA PALCOS

Entrevista exclusiva trilíngue | Por Chris Herrmann | Portal CH Multiartes

A ENTREVISTA

Precisamos ressignificar as práticas pedagógicas, tornando a música viva, afetiva e acessível à realidade do nosso tempo.

ANTONYEL PACHECO AND THE TEACHER'S BAND: WHEN MUSIC TRANSFORMS LIVES AND REACHES THE BIG STAGE

Exclusive Trilingual Interview | By Chris Herrmann | CH Multiartes Portal

A classroom, a few musical instruments, children discovering their abilities, and a teacher willing to explore new ways of teaching. This was the setting in São Luís, in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, where a story began that would reach far beyond the state's borders and capture the attention of thousands of people across Brazil.

At the helm of the Teacher's Band (Banda do Professor), musician and educator Antonyel Pacheco has developed an educational approach that values collective experience, listening, sensitivity, and freedom of expression. More than teaching notes, chords, and rhythms, his work seeks to help students understand music as a language capable of conveying emotions, strengthening self-confidence, and broadening horizons.

What began as musical gatherings in the living room of his own home grew into something remarkable. Spontaneous recordings of rehearsals began circulating on social media, reached millions of views, and caught the attention of celebrated Brazilian artists. Marcelo Bonfá shared and commented on the project's videos, Zé Ramalho also reposted performances by the young musicians, and Cazuza's official page, associated with the work of his mother, Lucinha Araújo, showed its appreciation for the initiative.

The achievements went well beyond the digital world. The Teacher's Band appeared on Altas Horas, the television program hosted by Serginho Groisman, took part in the LED Festival in Rio de Janeiro, and had the experience of sharing the stage with Ira! at Vibra São Paulo. For Antonyel, who grew up following his musical heroes in the pages of Guitar Player magazine and watching performances on MTV, these encounters represent the fulfillment of dreams that once seemed out of reach.

Yet perhaps the most interesting aspect of this journey lies in what social media numbers cannot show. Behind every performance is an educational process that respects each student's individual pace, encourages collaboration, and recognizes mistakes as an essential part of learning. In Antonyel's approach, the band works as a musical community in which every member plays an important role, regardless of who happens to be in the spotlight.

This philosophy also guides the way the project handles the public exposure of children and teenagers. Even as its popularity grows, the teacher emphasizes the importance of family involvement, protecting students' school routines, and choosing age-appropriate songs. From his perspective, success should never take priority over childhood or turn the musical experience into an obligation.

Another significant aspect is the project's commitment to the heritage of Brazilian music. By performing works by artists such as Belchior, Raul Seixas, Zé Ramalho, and Legião Urbana, the young musicians build a dialogue between generations and discover songs that have shaped the country's cultural history. The goal is not simply to revisit classics, but to understand their artistic richness and keep them alive through new interpretations.

The project also highlights an important reality of Brazil's cultural scene: initiatives born outside the country's major urban centers can gain national recognition and create opportunities for new talent. Antonyel says the Teacher's Band achieved considerable visibility in other regions before reaching a comparable level of recognition in its own state. One of his goals now is to turn that visibility into lasting opportunities for other young musicians and educators from Maranhão.

And the dreams continue. The next steps include creating original material, recording albums, expanding the band's performances, and strengthening the Music Space (Espaço Musical), where new groups can develop their own identities.

With a music education background from the Brazilian Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro, postgraduate studies in Music Therapy at the University of Münster in Germany, and experience teaching piano privately to children, I recognize in this journey issues I have always considered essential: the relationship between music and human development, the importance of sensitivity in learning, and the educator's role in helping individuals discover their potential.

In this exclusive interview for CH Multiartes, Antonyel Pacheco shares the principles behind his work, the challenges of social media exposure, his experiences alongside major names in Brazilian music, and the projects he hopes to bring to life. Above all, he speaks about what gives meaning to his mission as a teacher: watching a child discover their own voice and realize that music can transform the way they experience the world.

THE INTERVIEW

Professor Antonyel Pacheco | Photo: Personal Archive

1. Chris Herrmann: The Teacher's Band began as a music-teaching experience and gradually grew into something that perhaps you never imagined at the outset. When did you realize that your work with the students was moving beyond the boundaries of a music lesson and becoming a project with its own identity?

Antonyel Pacheco: We realized that we were building our own identity directly through our educational approach: structuring learning in a band format, recording these moments in a completely organic way, and creating a rotation system in which each student gets to experiment with different instruments. At first glance, this rotation may seem unusual. However, the intention is not to turn students into multi-instrumentalists overnight, but to give them a complete musical experience. Students need to feel the pulse and understand the rhythmic role of the drums, just as they need to grasp harmony and melodic textures.

As we developed this method and began recording rehearsals on video, we carried out several practical experiments. At no point did we consider copying ready-made formulas or moving away from our spontaneity. Social media often favors meticulously staged productions, with concert lighting and artificial sets, but we chose the opposite path: showing the reality of a lively, fluid, and genuine classroom. Our first recordings included the natural imperfections of the process, showing learning as it happened.

Over time, as the students matured musically and we invested in more precise audio and video equipment, we kept that original principle intact. Audiences began to notice every detail, every exchanged glance, and the children's genuine expressiveness. It was precisely by bringing together an inclusive teaching method and the authenticity of our daily routine that we realized the work had moved beyond an isolated lesson and become a project with its own voice and identity.

2.CH: Working with children and teenagers means understanding that each one has their own pace, abilities, and way of expressing themselves. How do you identify and develop each student's individual potential within a collective experience such as a band? And how do you make musical participation strengthen their confidence without encouraging comparisons or competition?

AP: Comparison and the urge to compete are natural impulses in human interaction; we cannot pretend they do not exist. Rather than ignoring them, our role as educators is to guide students toward recognizing their individuality and understanding their own limitations without feeling inferior. I particularly value students who arrive with no previous experience, much like someone learning to drive from scratch, without ingrained technical habits, because we can develop their musicality in a clear way that is connected to our method.

The central pillar of this work is building self-confidence. Shyness is merely an initial barrier that gradually disappears when students realize that making a mistake is not a reason for frustration or punishment, but a necessary and educational step toward getting it right. Fear of making mistakes is paralyzing; normalizing mistakes sets us free.

To prevent destructive competition, we work with the idea of a true "musical community," built on the same principle as a sports team: not everyone has the same prominent role at every moment, but every role is essential to the balance of the whole. If a student struggles with a particular passage, the group supports them and keeps the rhythm going. There is a fascinating phenomenon of collective self-regulation, similar to the classic physics experiment involving out-of-sync metronomes placed on a shared surface: over time, they naturally synchronize through resonance. In the band environment, shared experiences and rhythm help individual tempos come into harmony, teaching students to manage their egos, respect different stages of development, and build genuine confidence that extends beyond the classroom.

3.CH: Music has a special ability to awaken emotions and provide forms of expression that everyday communication does not always allow. In your work with the students, do you notice changes in the way they relate to others, communicate, or see themselves after they begin playing and singing? Could you share an experience that has been particularly meaningful to you as an educator?

AP: I always begin with a fundamental principle: music is the art of expressing feelings through sound. Before introducing theoretical formalities or complex rules of harmony, my first step is to work on listening and sensitivity to sound. I draw a clear parallel with language: musical notes are arranged like letters of the alphabet, combining to form words and messages. Just as a word can evoke affection, surprise, or sadness, chords carry that same emotional power.

In our first musical experiences, I introduce the sound of a major, minor, or dissonant chord and ask the students directly what they feel, what image or sensation it brings to mind. The result of this exploration is immediate: students stop seeing harmony as an abstract chord symbol and begin to understand it as an emotional narrative. They intuitively perceive tension, resolution, and melancholy. This perception deepens even when we analyze international songs, as they notice contrasts between the emotional weight of the chords and the meaning of the lyrics. We then discuss both aesthetic coherence and the techniques used in contemporary and commercial music, which sometimes deliberately subvert these conventions.

This immersion profoundly transforms the students' relationship with themselves and their surroundings. Seeing their eyes light up as they decode a sensation and realize they can express feelings that everyday words cannot reach is one of the most meaningful experiences of my teaching career. It is a pedagogy centered on sensation and active listening. I readily acknowledge that this approach requires openness and sensitivity; not every student responds to it, and that is part of the educational process. But those who connect with this proposal experience an expressive and human transformation that leaves a lasting mark on their development.

4.CH: The band's repertoire includes important names in Brazilian music, such as Legião Urbana, Zé Ramalho, Raul Seixas, and Pitty. How are the songs chosen? Is there also an intention to introduce new generations to artists and works that are part of Brazil's cultural history, creating a bridge between generations?

AP: The choice of this repertoire directly reflects our intention to promote a meaningful cultural revival. This is far from shallow nostalgia, the recurring idea that "everything was better in the past." It is a critical and conscious perspective on contemporary artistic production. We live in a time when the industry encourages disposable consumption, with short-lived tracks that often sacrifice harmonic, melodic, and poetic care. This does not mean demanding that every composition achieve the literary sophistication of a Chico Buarque song, but rather recognizing the importance of artistic commitment to songwriting.

From an educational standpoint, much of what receives massive attention today offers little substance for formative music education. That is why turning to masters such as Belchior, Zé Ramalho, Raul Seixas, and many others is a deliberate curricular and artistic choice. Their works helped shape the country's cultural identity and deserve to be preserved and kept alive.

By working with this repertoire alongside children and teenagers, we build a living bridge between different eras. We offer them a solid source of inspiration, sharpening their critical thinking and providing creative references for the future. This cultural revival has already produced real results around us. We see students and members of the community discovering and appreciating Brazilian classics with genuine enthusiasm, proving that good music does not grow old when it is presented with authenticity.

5.CH: The Teacher's Band videos have reached millions of views and brought extraordinary visibility to the young musicians. At the same time, children and teenagers need protection and guidance when they are exposed to the public. How do you manage the balance between sharing the work, valuing the students, and protecting their childhood and adolescence?

AP: This is a central and daily concern in our work. First of all, we need to distinguish educational visibility from inappropriate exposure. Harmful exposure occurs when a child is placed in situations unsuitable for their age, such as sexualized choreography or performing songs with explicit content. In our case, what we share is an educational example of childhood being valued: children and teenagers experiencing music in depth, playing real instruments, and performing classics that enrich their cultural development.

To maintain this balance and protect the members, we follow clear protocols in close cooperation with their families:

1. Careful repertoire selection and age-appropriate lyrics: We carefully review the songs. When necessary, we make specific adjustments to verses that are not appropriate for the children's level of maturity, ensuring a healthy musical experience.
2. Age-appropriate appearance and conduct: We take care to ensure that clothing and body language respect the naturalness of childhood and adolescence, avoiding any form of adultification or artificial stage behavior.
3. Protection of personal information and identity: We avoid tagging students by name or identifying them excessively in posts, keeping publications on the project's official channels. I also advise parents and students about the risks of using personal social media accounts too early or excessively.
4. Communication and commitment with parents: We maintain ongoing, transparent dialogue with guardians. Our focus has never been a blind race for metrics or easy monetization. If our sole goal were algorithm-driven views, we would be exploiting superficial trends.

What drives us is the educational and inspirational impact of the work: showing that it is possible to learn quality music with seriousness, affection, and absolute respect for each young person's time and integrity.

6.CH: One interesting aspect of the project is the participation of different students, with voices and instruments rotating among them. How does this work in practice? And how do you deal with the possibility that some members receive more public attention than others, especially when certain videos go viral?

AP: To understand this dynamic, it is essential to distinguish between the different levels of participation within the project. There is the Teacher's Band itself, our original and more experienced formation, which has a performance schedule and carries out professional artistic work. Then there are the various groups of students in training at the Music Space. The main band serves as a living source of inspiration for those who are just starting out. New students look up to these musicians with admiration rather than rivalry, seeing them as a concrete example of what they themselves can achieve.

In our classes, we work in groups, with the rotation of instruments and voices as the foundation of the method. Each group creates its own video productions, documenting its actual progress at that stage of learning. From time to time, we bring students from different levels together, enriching the musical experience and expanding the collective reach.

When it comes to visibility and viral content, we maintain very open communication with everyone. It is natural for more advanced groups or videos featuring certain songs to achieve impressive numbers, while beginner groups may initially receive more modest engagement. We encourage students and families to view these metrics in terms of the learning process: the videos serve as a historical and educational record of each person's development. When students understand that every stage has value and that the main goal is not to race against the algorithm, but to grow artistically and personally, the focus remains on music and mutual support.

7.CH: Taking part in the LED Festival and Altas Horas, as well as connecting with major figures in Brazilian rock, such as Nasi from Ira!, represents a significant experience for a project that began in a classroom. Which of these experiences surprised you the most? Was there ever a moment when you stopped and thought, "Look how far those first musical gatherings have brought us!"?

AP: This is undoubtedly the high point of our journey. It is the realization of a childhood dream: building direct connections with idols who have always been major influences on me. I remember being a boy, flipping through the pages of Guitar Player magazine or watching MTV, completely absorbed by the performances and seeing Edgard Scandurra with his unmistakable left-handed playing style. Back then, all of this seemed completely out of reach.

Seeing this circle come full turn through recognition from the very artists who created those works is indescribable. Marcelo Bonfá sharing and commenting on our Legião Urbana videos, Zé Ramalho reposting them, Cazuza's official page, through his mother Lucinha Araújo, showing us its support... Practically every artist we have paid tribute to has responded, warmly acknowledging the work of these children.

When we began our informal rehearsals in the living room, we did dream of receiving attention from those artists, but it seemed far away. Suddenly, we found ourselves invited to appear on Altas Horas with Serginho Groisman, participating in the LED Festival in Rio de Janeiro, and sharing the stage with Ira! at Vibra São Paulo. More than surprise, there is a profound feeling of fulfillment and wonder. It is impossible not to pause at certain moments, look at the boys playing alongside legends of Brazilian music, and think: "Look at what that first meeting in the classroom has become!"

8.CH: The Teacher's Band began in Maranhão and has gained visibility beyond the state's borders. Many cultural and educational projects developed outside major urban centers still face difficulties in achieving national recognition. What does this journey represent to you, and what doors would you like to open for other young artists and educators from Maranhão?

AP: This journey represents a breaking of paradigms. When we analyze our audience data and reach, we encounter a curious and fascinating reality: the largest concentration of our audience is precisely in Brazil's Southeast region and in other state capitals, such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte, followed by Fortaleza and Salvador, with São Luís adding to that strength. A phenomenon has emerged in which the project gained massive visibility outside Maranhão before achieving the same level of recognition within the state itself.

An artist's usual path is often to establish a presence in their local scene first and then seek opportunities in major centers. In our case, social media and the impact of our work reversed that logic: from our classroom in São Luís, we built direct bridges to some of the country's biggest stages.

My main purpose now is to turn this visibility into a permanent structure of opportunities, becoming a catalyst for others. The project has naturally revealed remarkable talent and become a breeding ground for young musicians. We are now working toward institutional consolidation so that the bridge we have built will not serve only the Teacher's Band, but become a viable path for other young artists and educators in our region. Seeing an essentially educational project from Maranhão achieve this kind of national reach is rare and rewarding. Our goal is to secure this foundation and use it to empower an entire new generation.

9.CH: As an educator, you closely follow not only each student's musical development but also their personal discoveries. Is there a story involving one of the members that made you realize, in a particularly powerful way, how much music can influence a child's or teenager's life?

AP: David's example captures this transformation very strongly: he is a young person who lives and breathes music around the clock. His relationship with art is visceral and spontaneous. In the same way, following the development of Bernardo, Yuri, Benjamim, and Hellena means witnessing daily human growth. We see initial shyness and hesitation give way to a confident and expressive attitude.

Music profoundly changes these children's daily lives, from their routines to the public recognition they receive at school and in the streets, where people ask for photographs and interviews. While we celebrate this attention, we remain vigilant to ensure that they stay grounded and that their childhood and education are protected.

The most significant impact, however, goes beyond stages and social media: music awakens a unique sensitivity, builds solid self-confidence, and opens up horizons and future possibilities that once seemed distant. Following this turning point up close, watching a child discover their own voice and recognize their value in the world through sound, is the most rewarding and transformative part of my mission as an educator.

10.CH: After so many achievements, what are the next dreams and projects for the Teacher's Band and the Bandinha do Professor? And what message would you give to other teachers, children, and teenagers who want music to become an important part of their lives?

AP: I often say that when you achieve a dream, it immediately unfolds and multiplies into new ones. For the Teacher's Band, the next major artistic step is to establish our own original work: composing our own songs, recording albums, and developing a consistent schedule of performances, always taking great care to preserve each member's school routine, leisure time, and childhood. The professional experience of performing on stage should be understood not as an exhausting obligation, but as a genuine source of pleasure and fulfillment for them.

For the Music Space and the other groups in training, the goal is to further expand our physical and educational facilities, serving as an incubator for new groups to emerge. We want the Teacher's Band to serve as an inspiring reference. If students from other groups feel motivated to form their own bands and follow parallel paths, we will be here with all our resources and promotional channels to support them.

As for my message to educators, I invite them to break with traditional paradigms. Music education in Brazil still strongly inherits an orthodox, Eurocentric, and excessively theoretical model that often creates an immediate gap between teaching and new generations. Imposing sheet music and abstract rules before awakening the joy of sound discourages and alienates young people. We need to rethink educational practices, making music vibrant, emotional, and accessible to the reality of our time. And to the children and young people who dream of music, my message is to believe in their own voices and sensitivity: music is not merely an exercise in technical repetition or motor development, but one of the deepest ways to express oneself, touch lives, and transform one's own story.

ANTONYEL PACHECO UND DIE BAND DES LEHRERS: WENN MUSIK LEBEN VERÄNDERT UND DIE GROSSEN BÜHNEN ERREICHT

Exklusives dreisprachiges Interview | Von Chris Herrmann | CH Multiartes-Portal

Professor Antonyel Pacheco | Foto: Privatarchiv

Damals schien all das völlig unerreichbar.
